The Covid-19 pandemic coupled with the Movement Control Order (MCO), which has been extended till April 14, is putting pressure on Malaysia’s healthcare systems.
The Health Ministry noted that there was a current shortage in the country’s blood supply and donations were needed to replenish and maintain the stockpile.
According to the Health Director-General Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, health authorities were currently rationing blood supplies to ensure they are not drastically diminished.
The same was said by the National Blood Centre that mentioned that the country would still need blood donations during the MCO and expressed concerns over the many blood donation drives and centers that were forced to close over fears of the coronavirus infection.
Now, MOH is studying the possibility of getting the public to donate blood from home.
The ministry hopes to use this “urbanized” blood donation method to keep the nation’s blood supply from dwindling following the nationwide quarantine.
If this system were put into place, those who wish to donate their blood can simply contact the authorities to have healthcare professionals go on a “house calls” and collect blood from donors in the comfort of their own living rooms.
Be sure that TRP will give you more deets on how you can help donate your blood if MOH decides to fully implement the strategy.
Separately, the MOH is also looking to recruit 2,000 retired doctors and nurses to support the country’s healthcare services during the Covid-19 pandemic.
These medical professionals will be appointed on a contractual basis to replenish the ranks of Malaysia’s hardworking frontline medical workers.
These frontliners have been diligently working day and night, with some pulling in multiple shifts, to screen and treat coronavirus patients.
According to a report by Berita Harian, MOH has identified some 3,000 retired nurses as candidates to return to the force.
