Attention girls (and guys)! There’s another list of dangerous cosmetic products released by the Health Ministry!

This time, these products have;

Mercury!

Today (August 6), Health director-general Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah announced 7 cosmetic products detected by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) that were found containing mercury.

What’s so dangerous about Mercury?

According to Dr. Hisham, the mercury in these products can seep into your skin and lead to kidney and nerve damage.

Upon initial contact with the skin, mercury causes rashes and irritation.

Children coming into contact with mercury-containing products can have stunted growth.

If used by expecting mothers, their unborn babies can be affected by these mercury tainted products.

Isn’t there some legal action to stop this?

Currently, under the Sale of Drugs Act 1952, Regulation 7(1)(a) of Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984;

An individual found guilty selling or distributing said products can be fined a maximum RM25,000 or 3 years jail, or both for the first offense.

Whereas for companies found guilty, the penalty is heftier.

Companies found guilty for the first time will be fined a maximum of RM50,000 or 5 years jail or both.

While companies repeating these offenses can be fined up to RM100,000.

If you do have been using any of these products and are experiencing any skin irritation or discomfort, please do go visit your local GP.

Besides, you can always check your product up at the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency website.

Because this isn’t the first time cosmetic products have been found dangerous to consumers.
