Ummi Saiyyah Baharudin is proudly making a name for herself as a butcher in the wet market industry. The 25-year-old indeed has been carving her mark with her cousin, Nur Farah Izzati at a stall in Pasar Raja Bot, also known as the Chow Kit Road Market.

However as noted by Harian Metro, Ummi was initially working a corporate job before pursuing the profession. It was only in 2021 that she joined forces with her cousin and has not looked back since.

“I genuinely enjoy this work because it requires unique skills. It took me three months to master the proper techniques and methods for cutting chicken to ensure customer satisfaction,” said Ummi.

Yet, like other occupations, there are various challenges that come with her job. For one, the market’s distinct odour can sometimes be a bit too strong.

“The market does come with its own odour. Especially when I am cutting chicken, there is bound to be some lingering scent on my clothes. But I don’t mind and I am used to it.”

From time to time, Ummi and her cousin also face interesting interaction with customers. Given her age, many older customers often offer playful teases and flirty remarks.

Ummi, however, does not take this to heart. She instead sees this as light-hearted interactions that add humour to her day.

In fact, despite all the minor inconveniences, Ummi still finds a strong calling and passion for the occupation.

Applause from netizens

Ummi’s story has since resonated with netizens online. Many praised the 25-year-old for following her passion. Users applauded her for staying true to her calling and not conforming to society’s expectations.

“Don’t worry what people think, you don’t live for them. Just do what makes you happy,” wrote one user.

Another user commented with words of encouragement, “All jobs are noble. Honest earning soothes your heart and soul. Corruptors are the worst breed.”

One user, however, simply jokingly wrote, “Can earn more money become meat chopper.”
