A 44-year-old single mother, Nor Hariyati, has suffered kidney failure after taking weight loss and whitening pills for 16 years.

She had to undergo kidney dialysis thrice weekly to maintain her life.

Nor Hariyati regrets taking these products and is now spreading awareness of the harmful effects of such products through social media.

She had been taking slimming pills and whitening healthcare products for a long time to lose weight and have brighter skin, thinking her health was safe and sound.

However, she consulted a doctor when she found that one foot was swollen, her appetite was lost, and her urine was cloudy.

It was discovered that her kidneys had lost their function and necessitated kidney dialysis.

“Now, I have to undergo kidney dialysis three times a week, each lasting for 4 hours. I paid a heavy price.

Although she followed the doctor’s advice, it was too late.

Speaking to the English-language newspaper The Star, Nor Hariyati said she knew nothing about the health effects of illegal supplements before 1999 because access to information was so limited.

I want to use the power of the media to make people aware that bad weight loss drugs and health care products can cause health harm. I don’t want them to be like me.

Importance Of Seeking Medical Advice

According to the 2022 National Health and Morbidity Survey, one-third of Malaysian adults are obese, and their prevalence rate will increase from 10.6% in 2012 to 14.3% in 2022.

Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Assoc Prof Dr Barakatun Nisak Mohd Yusof said that obese people should seek professional medical advice instead of using weight-loss drugs arbitrarily.

At the same time, Malaysian Pharmacists Society president Amrahi Buang advised the public to be vigilant against the illegal sale of weight loss products on the market, especially those with traditional herbal ingredients.

Consumers should buy herbal slimming products from government-certified and regulated manufacturers and receive professional advice at the same time.

Certain weight-loss prescriptions may be effective for certain groups of people but should still be used under the guidance of a medical professional and in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise program, he said.

It is important to prioritize one’s health over physical appearance and seek professional help when needed.
