UEC Will Still Not Be Recognised, Says Muhyiddin

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin clarified that Putrajaya had made no promises to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) after a meeting with Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Hua Zhong) leaders.
What you need to know: The Prime Minister met with Hua Zhong leaders on July 16 2020. Among allegations that he is considering to recognise UEC, he later clarified that he made no such promise. He also mentioned that UEC has received partial recognition already by a previous government. However, that only applies to UEC graduates following a specialty field of Chinese Language at the Institut Pendidikan Guru Malaysia (IPGM). Additionally, the UEC graduates must have achieved at least a C and above (honours) in Bahasa Malaysia.
Who said what: The Prime Minister released a statement on his official Twitter account to clarify the issue. He also mentioned that UEC must follow the National Education Policy if a solution is to be considered by the government in the future.
Why it matters: The recognition of UEC in the country has been a bitter struggle for the ethnic Chinese community for decades, turning into a political hot button issue. Many Chinese Malaysians feel frustrated that the examination is not recognised in their home country when instead it is recognised overseas. Countless broken promises to recognise the examination, usually prior to elections, have not helped the community’s trust in the government either.
