Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir has formally announced his resignation as Kedah Menteri Besar, which is effective immediately.

During a press conference broadcasted live from Wisma Darul Aman earlier today (17 May), Mukhriz announced that he has informed Kedah Sultan Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah of his resignation.

I have informed the Sultan on the reasons I lost majority (support) and with this, I resign from the post of Menteri Besar, effective immediately.

The announcement follows the 12 May kerfuffle where Mukhriz, who is also Jitra assemblyman and deputy president of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), reportedly lost majority support in the state legislative assembly.

This is the second time Mukhriz has lost the position of Kedah Menteri Besar since 2016, when his father Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed fell out with Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who was Prime Minister at the time, over the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
