Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian is appalled at the wrong nickname for Sarawak in an article printed in the Malaysia Airline’s in-flight magazine Going Places.

Sim made the matter known on his official Facebook account and included a picture of the page in question.

The article’s subhead in the June 2023 edition read, “Four hotels to book on your next trip to the Land Below the Wind.”

The correct nickname for Sarawak is the “Land of the Hornbills.” The “Land Below the Wind” refers to the neighbouring state, Sabah.

Have you found my shock? It’s hard to be #SegulaiSejalai while Sarawakians are expected to know West Malaysia but West Malaysians are still making mistakes on some of the most basic ideas of Sarawak.

“Segulai Sejalai” is an Iban phrase from Sarawak which means “Together in Unity.”

The phrase caught Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s attention at the recent state-level Gawai dinner. Anwar voiced his intent to adopt the phrase as the motto for unity in the country.

Netizens lamented that most West Malaysians always confuse Sabah and Sarawak.

Criticisms were also lobbed at Malaysia Airlines for making the mistake. It’s seen as an unacceptable error since the airline is at the forefront of the country’s tourism efforts.
