Malaysia has no winters, but sometimes it can be cold enough to have light hailstorms and see high-altitude areas covered in small amounts of ice flakes.

No matter how often it happened, Malaysians are still in awe of the icy sight. It’s proven once again based on netizens’ reactions to pictures of Mount Kinabalu, Sabah, recently posted on Facebook by Sabah Parks.

The pictures showed icicles and light frost at the peak of Mount Kinabalu when it recorded a temperature reading ranging from -3 to -5 degrees Celcius between 2.30am and 7am on 7 April 2023.

The low temperatures caused rock and wooden surfaces to freeze up and form pieces of crystals or ice flakes.

The icy phenomenon started from the Sub Station Panalaban in Kinabalu Park up to the mountain’s peak.

Sabah Parks warned that the ice made smooth granite surfaces slippery and cautioned climbers to be careful.

Despite the cold weather, climbing activities have been smooth and controlled, with no emergencies or accidents reported.

They added that acute mountain sickness (AMS) is known to easily occur in cold weather.

The icy phenomenon is not uncommon on Mount Kinabalu and it’s known to happen almost yearly.

Several climbers at the peak on February 2022 saw snow falling in the area and managed to record the whole experience.

According to Buzzkini, it snowed in Mount Kinabalu in 1975, 1993 and 2018.
