Almost three years ago, the Covid-19 virus spread worry and caution, making people take prevention measures more seriously.

However, nowadays more and more people have begun to let their guards down regarding the virus.

With the festive season around the corner, one Twitter user pointed out that Malaysia’s positivity rate curve is steeply increasing with our waning immunity as well as the “no more masks” attitude.

In her tweet, Twitter user @melatinungsari said:

The positivity rate curve is steeply increasing with many ppl with waning immunity and no more masks. I’m a fan of letting people know the risks – and the truth is that if you haven’t gotten covid yet or in a while, you may soon get it (again). Going into raya – this is sad.

Additionally she tweeted saying:

I know 1) a lot of people aren’t testing anymore 2) a lot of people test but don’t report 3) a lot of people have deleted MySJ but there is clearly a trend here.

Quoting her tweet and agreeing with some of her points, a doctor, @azmanrocks said:

Curve is rising and reflects what we see in hospitals. Yesterday there were 6 Covid cases in my department. Mostly elderly, mostly admitted (1 happened to be my distant relative). A month ago on average we had 2 per day, and rarely got admitted.

He added on that the people should continue following precautionary measures to avoid getting infected and in most cases, hospitalized.

Wear your mask (N95, KF94, KN95) when you are indoors (Masjid, shopping mall, kedai runcit). Ventilation at open air restaurants are better than indoor restaurants. Test yourselves before going to gatherings. If you have symptoms, test yourself. If you are positive, update your MySejahtera and isolate.

He also noted that prior to this, our goal was always to avoid infection.

Even when we were infected we tried to delay the spread, to prevent many people from getting infected at once. There are many reports nowadays claiming that most of the Covid cases are mild (even though small groups with severe symptoms exist), the main idea is to prevent getting infected many times.

Recently, the Health Ministry recommended the education sector to conduct screenings on students, teachers and staff.

This comes after 11 of the 18 Covid-19 clusters reported from March 26 to April 1, were education clusters.

In a statement to the press, health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the total, six clusters involved educational institutions under the Ministry of Education (MOE) involving three colleges, a religious school, a boarding school and a secondary school.

He said the five other clusters involved four non-MOE schools/colleges and one childcare centre.

He also noted that the number of patient admissions to health facilities per 100,000 residents increased by 24.1 per cent in the 13th epidemiology week (ME 13/2023) compared to the 12th epidemiology week (ME 12/2023) bringing the cumulative number of new cases to 5,052,337 and the number of recoveries to 5,004,546.cases.

The statement also stated that an average of 10,324 active cases were also reported from Jan 25 to April 1.

With that, please mask up and stay safe people! The fight against Covid-19 is not over.
