It’s a sad day for bookworms everywhere because Book Depository, a UK-based online bookstore, is closing its virtual doors on 26 April 2023.
The parent company, Amazon, announced it had decided to “eliminate” several positions across its Devices and Books businesses due to the “uncertain economy,” The Guardian reported.
Amazon first acquired Book Depository in 2011. At the time, The Book Depository (as it was known then before the acquisition) was a small-scale competitor to Amazon’s online bookselling business.
Readers everywhere have relied on Book Depository for affordable books and free international deliveries for years.
Book Depository said the last date customers will be able to place orders is 26 April, but it’ll provide support for any issues until 23 June 2023. Meanwhile, the bookseller will be winding down the business before closing the website.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you, from everyone at Book Depository and our book-loving customers, for your supportive partnership over the years in helping us to make printed books more accessible to readers around the world.
Andy Chart, head of vendor management
A lot of you aren't aware of how *bad* this really is. Many out there relied on BookDepository to get their books at reasonable prices. It was also one of the few places you could get indie books if you lived outside the US/UK.

Where can you get books in Malaysia?
While it’s sad that Book Depository is coming to its end, Malaysians still get to enjoy the luxury of patronising the bookstores here when most places are shutting down theirs.
Here’s a list of some of the bookstores in Klang Valley:
- BookXcess
- MPH
- Popular
- Kinokuniya
- Borders
- 7CAFé by 7-Eleven (in partnership with BookXcess)
- Gerakbudaya
- Lit Books
- Silverfish Books
- Pustaka Mumin
- Buku Fixi Online
- Tsutaya Books
- Eslite
Additionally, there are occasional book fairs such as the Big Bad Wolf and the upcoming Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair from 26 May to 4 June 2023.
