A viral video recently showed a group of local fishermen having a verbal altercation with the Singapore police coast guard.
The Singapore police seemingly tried to chase the group away and were met with an exchange of angry words.
According to Free Malaysia Today, the police allegedly tried to prevent a group of 10 fishermen from setting up their shrimp nets in the Pasir Laba area, near the Second Link Bridge in Iskandar Puteri, at 5.30pm on 23 October.
Kota Iskandar assemblyman Datuk Pandak Ahmad was quoted by Malaysiakini as saying that he regretted the actions of the Singaporean authorities for using harsh words during the argument with the fishermen.
What’s regrettable is that the fishermen were anchoring their nets within the nation’s waters in the Straits of Johor and the Singaporean authorities were the ones who entered our borders illegally.
Kota Iskandar assemblyman Datuk Pandak Ahmad said, as reported by BuletinTV3
Fortunately, the fishermen managed to capture the incident on video as proof that they were still within Malaysian waters.
Iskandar Puteri police chief Rahmat Ariffin confirmed that the police had received a report at 2.30pm on 24 October and further investigations are underway.
Members of the public are advised against making speculation on the matter which could lead to public disturbance.
A netizen who caught wind of the incident wondered why the Malaysian coast guards weren’t present.
