Another local Malaysian actor is in hot water while trying to promote an upcoming show.

Erry Putra, 44, posted several photos on his Instagram profile with an offensive caption and didn’t sit well for many people.

The photos showed the actor standing next to his female co-star in an undisclosed film or TV show scene with the caption, “Rogolll time (Raping time)” accompanied with suggestive emojis.

Due to the backlash, Erry has temporarily made his Instagram account private, and no official statement has been released yet.

However, his post has been screenshot by some quick netizens and shared online as proof.

Netizens condemned the caption and pointed out that a rape joke is never funny. They also claimed that Erry purposely posted something offensive as guerrilla marketing for his upcoming show.

The fact that Erry could post such a caption showed the pervasiveness of rape culture in society.

His post has spurred a movement to stop normalising sexual assault as a laughing matter or as joke material.

Malaysian actress Sharifah Amani posted an image on Twitter to ask for an end to rape jokes and rape culture.

She shared an image by Apa Khabar Anak Seni which said “Rogol bukan bahan jenaka (Rape is not a laughing matter).”

What do the other netizens think of it?

Netizens agreed that rape is not a laughing matter and some victims find it hard to relive their trauma. Some topics are not to be played with or made fun of.

However, some netizens don’t think people like Erry were acting when they could joke about a serious matter like it was nothing and without empathy for victims.

A few of them claimed that the actor was already problematic since Myspace days. They also think most of the actors who perpetrate the rape culture are actors who were popular in the 2000s.

In another case, another actor Fauzi Nawawi admitted on live television that he had to hide his enjoyment when he was performing rape scenes.

The actor also went into detail about how he performed the rape scenes. Due to what he blatantly said on television, netizens revived the ‘Zero Rape Tolerance’ petition.
