Sicily Is Slashing Flight Tickets And Hotel Costs For Tourists After Lockdown Is Lifted

Tourism is one of the main industries in Italy, representing roughly 13% of its GDP in 2019. Therefore, as the global lockdown threatens to cripple the tourism industry for many countries, one of Italy’s most popular destinations is trying to kickstart the tourist haven again.
The island of Sicily has announced that it will offer to pay half of visitor’s flight costs and a third of hotel expenses as part of their efforts to entice visitors.
Sicily will also provide free tickets and entry to its many museums, archaeological sites, and other areas of interest.
The proposed plan will cost them 50 million euros (around RM233 million), but they believe it will be a small price to pay for the influx of tourism. The island has lost an upwards of 1 billion euros (about RM4.7 billion) since they closed their doors on 10 May.
The travel vouchers will only be available once the country reopens its borders, but in the meantime you can keep an eye out on the Sicily tourism website for updates.
