Aquaria KLCC Donates RM200,000 To UMT For Phase 2 Of Coral Conservation Campaign

During this Coral Conservation Campaign, 1,000 coral nubbins will be planted in Pulau Bidong, Terengganu, to restore the declining rate of coral survivorship.

In collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Aquaria KLCC launched the second part of their Coral Conservation Campaign for the corals in Pulau Bidong, Terengganu.

The launch was held at Aquaria KLCC’s iconic Aquatheatre, with the presence of distinguished guests, including representatives from the Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF), Tourism Malaysia, and UMT.

Previously, Aquaria KLCC contributed RM68,000 for Phase 1 of the campaign to UMT which focused on researching corals that exhibited resilience against increasingly adverse weather conditions.

In collaboration with UMT, we can utilize their expertise and resources to achieve our main goal, which is the restoration and preservation of coral reefs.

Together, we can make a significant impact and raise awareness about the importance of coral conservation.

For Phase 2, they will implement the findings of the research into practical applications to further restore and preserve coral reefs throughout Malaysia. As part of the implementation, Aquaria KLCC donated another RM200,000 for the coral planting initiative in Pulau Bidong.

During the event, guests were displayed an underwater show where divers demonstrated how the coral planting initiative is going to take place in Pulau Bidong.

Besides that, they were also taught how to attach small coral nubbins to frag plugs in an activity. Those coral nubbins will then grow bigger with more polyps and will then be ready to be planted in the ocean.

The demonstrations showcased the meticulous and delicate steps involved in restoring coral reefs, highlighting the dedication and expertise of the teams involved.

The Coral Conservation Campaign will see 1,000 coral nubbins planted in Pulau Bidong to restore the declining rate of coral survivorship in these past years. The campaign is expected to run until next year.

Activities at Aquaria KLCC during the Coral Conservation Campaign

In conjunction with the ongoing campaign, Aquaria KLCC will be introducing an ‘Adopt A Coral’ program to encourage public participation which aims to raise awareness.

They will also host coral planting activities during this period, providing an opportunity for individuals to actively contribute to the conservation work by replanting and attaching corals at Aquaria KLCC. These corals will then be transplanted to restoration sites.
