Although our number of Covid-19 cases have been rising steadily for the past week as patients begin showing symptoms of the virus, there is good news: our R-value, the rate of transmission, has been steadily declining for 5 days straight.

According to Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, we are currently at an R-value of 1.14, a rather large drop since peaking at 1.21 just 5 days ago.
R-values
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Malaysia has been using R-values such as R0– pronounced R-naught– to determine the rate of infectivity of the virus.
In simple terms, the number means how many people can 1 infected person spread the virus to. An R0 of 1.5 means 1 infected person can spread it to 1.5 people.
Rt, which is the virus’ actual transmission rate, takes into account policies such as the various stages of MCO (Movement Control Order), which limits the virus’ potential spread, and the healthcare system’s way of quarantining infected individuals.
