78 lawmakers have signed a petition urging the government to lower the fine for breaking the mandatory mask-wearing rule, which currently stands at RM1,000.

What you need to know: A student cried on TV when he was fined RM1,000 for not wearing his mask properly at a train station, which tugged on the heartstrings of Malaysians. Many condoned the harsh punishment, especially since the fine will be a heavy burden to bear for those in lower income groups.

The members of parliament involved are suggesting lower the fine from RM1,000 to RM250. They noted that the RM1,000 fine was too heavy for the public especially during these trying economic times.

Who said what: Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii said that the fine is meant to be educational, not punitive. Malaysians should not have to risk financial stability if they are fined. However, those who breach the no-mask rule openly and frequently should be given heavier punishments.
