After the particularly nasty Covid-19 outbreak earlier this month thanks to the PUI Sivagangga Cluster, the Health Ministry has announced the emergence of another cluster in the northern state on 13 August.

Tawar Cluster, as it is known, was detected when a 53-year-old Malaysian businessman (Case 9113) seeked medical treatment on 8 August with complaints of a fever and chest pains.

He was screened for Covid-19 and the results came back positive on 11 August.

After doing some digging on his movements, it turned out that the man had attended a religious ceremony for the death of a family member that took place from 31 July to 1 August.

There were 30 people in attendance.

With the Health Ministry carrying out active case detection, 86 close contacts were screened, including family members as well as close contacts in the hospital where he was treated.

From those screened, 9 others were found positive for the coronavirus and 21 tested negative, while the results of 56 tests are still pending.

So far, all the positive cases are family members of the patient who also attended the funeral prayers ceremony. The cluster also covers the districts of Baling, Kuala Muda and Kulim.

The Health Ministry is still investigating the source of the infection.

On the bright side, three clusters have been officially declared as over, which are the Kuching Medical Centre Cluster, PUI Pitakwa Cluster and PUI Shirala Cluster.
