This morning, it was a pandemonium outside the nomination centre in Tenom, Sabah.

All hell broke loose when the Election Commission (SPR) rejected the nomination by Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat’s president Datuk Peter Anthony.

In the incident that started around 10 am, Peter was present to submit the nomination form for the Parliamentary seat of Tenom.

When his application was rejected, his supporters became angry and rioted to the extent that the police force was forced to use tear gas.

Several video recordings have also gone viral on social media, exposing the stark reality of the fragility of the democratic process.

Bukit Aman’s operations director for the coming general election, Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali, confirmed the incident.

He said the incident occurred after the SPR rejected the nomination for specific reasons.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani was waiting for a detailed report from Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Idris Abdullah regarding the incident.

Chequered Path

A former Sabah Infrastructure Development Minister and Parti Warisan Sabah vice-president, Peter was no stranger to controversies.

In August this year, the Special Corruption Court in Kota Kinabalu released and acquitted him of five charges of changing illegal money laundering totalling RM8.75 million.

His case was related to selling land to Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda) in Tongod, Sandakan, between 2014 and 2016.

In June 2020, Peter was accused of five charges relating to laundering money and receiving proceeds from illicit activities totalling RM8.75 million between 2014 and 2016.

All accusations are related to the case of selling land to Risda.

He quit Warisan in December 2021, claiming he disagreed with Warisan’s decision to expand to Peninsular Malaysia.

Party president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said he quit due to the ongoing court case.
