Corruption Or Ignorance At Local Government?

Meanwhile, netizens are wondering why the restaurant is allowed to set up tables outside its premise.

Others said the accident should serve as a wake up call for local governments to take action against errant restaurant operators.

Dining tables set up on roads and pavements are indeed very common in Malaysia.

According to Section 9(10) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 and Section 46 of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974, it is actually illegal to do so.

The local council can confiscate the tables and chairs, as well as imposed fines on the businesses.

Most diners would be unaware of this as they enjoy dining out in the open.

Furthermore, the law applies to the businesses themselves rather than their customers.

The manner in which businesses can continue to flout the law with impunity had given rise to allegations that the local governments are either corrupt, ignorant or couldn’t care less.

Hopefully, something can be done before more lives are lost.
