Following pictures and videos circulating showing hordes of people gathered at the Sungai Pisang waterfall and streams in the Gombak Forest Reserve earlier this week, the Selangor Forestry Department forest have warned the reserves in the state are off limits under Phase Two of the National Recover Plan (NRP).

According to Selangor Forestry director Datuk Ahmad Fadzil Abd Majid, the directive will remain in effect until further notice and anyone found engaging in recreational activities within the forest reserves will be issued compounds.

Leisure makers were caught bathing, picnicking and littering

In various social media posts, people were seen splashing about in rivers, under waterfalls, and some hiking.

There were also groups of people seen having picnics.

Under Phase Two of the NRP, picnicking is allowed for those who are fully vaccinated but the Selangor Forestry Department stressed that this does NOT include areas in forest reserves.

It was also reported that the state Forestry Department, Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) and district health office set up a monitoring operation at Sungai Pisang last Thursday following the incident.

Since operations began, authorities found 50 fully-vaccinated people engaging in recreational activities at the waterfall and were asked to leave the area.
