Petaling MP Maria Chin Abdullah’s statement defending the recent Dataran Merdeka rally by Members of Parliament (MPs) were heavily criticised by Malaysians who questioned why the MPs are acting in such a manner during a pandemic.
She recently posted a statement on Facebook, saying that despite the comments saying that MPs didn’t follow Covid-19 SOPs, they had to do it in order to save the country.
Many comment that there is no SOP. Sure but in this situation I am of the view that saving this country is more important. We are all worried – you think we are not. In such a situation where you are surrounded by SBs, police, FRUs, black Mariah, media – we were all push to a corner as they try to block us. I make no excuse. If we are afraid and not come out it is a disservice to the nation.

MPs recently gathered at Dataran Merdeka in protest after they were denied from entering Parliament.
According to reports, around 107 MPs have been called in to give their statements to the police related to the rally after reports were lodged.
Malaysians were critical
Thousands of commenters were unimpressed with the showing, saying that it doesn’t help Malaysians who are staying at home to stop the spread of Covid-19 and frontliners who have to contend with current healthcare crisis.
Some even said that if they actually were thinking about helping their constituencies, they wouldn’t even have time to gather and rally.
While there were some who said that it’s better to fight the pandemic first and then give the chance for the rakyat to choose who they think is fit to lead the country.
