In what is a historical move, the Parliament, via a voice vote today agreed to abolish the mandatory death penalty.
If the Bill passes the Senate later and is given royal assent, the death penalty will become an option, up to the judges’ discretion.
The bill was passed after its third reading at the Dewan Rakyat today, as reported by the Malay Mail.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) Ramkarpal Singh gave the winding-up speech on the Bill afterwhich the MPs voted.
