National hockey player Hanis Nadiah Onn has been suspended from the national team after posting a racist comment on Kosmo Online’s post about the AR Rahman concert last month.

The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) said that she won’t be included in the national team line-up when they go to the upcoming 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia.

Only if she showed a positive change in behaviour will the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHC) re-evaluate her suspension.

A committee led by Director General of the National Sports Council (MSN) Datuk Ahmad Shapawi and MHC President Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal summoned Hanis on 7 February for the investigation.

She had admitted to posting the comment “It must smell nice in there” on Kosmo’s Instagram post.

They also summoned the national women’s hockey team coach, Mohd Nasihin Nubli Ibrahim to help with the investigation.

He said that as the main player of the team, Hanis is humble and very disciplined throughout the training and tournaments.

The investigation concluded that Hanis uploaded the racist comment directing it at a concert that was mostly attended by Indians.

Hanis is found guilty of making comments that could be misunderstood or caused misunderstanding, annoyance or anger in another party. She has violated MHF’s code of ethics as well as tarnished the image of the national hockey team and the federation.

The committee hopes that the action will serve as a useful reminder and lesson to Hanis and all national athletes to always be careful with any posts or comments on all social media platforms.
