Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the Sungai Buloh Hospital may be converted into a fully hybrid hospital if the rate of Category 1 and 2 admissions remains at high levels and ICU cases remain low.

He said while the admission rate was rising, many of the cases did not need to be sent to the ICU and only required “step-down care” and treatment, as reported by Free Malaysia Today.

If this trend continues for the next three to four weeks, Sungai Buloh Hospital can change to a hybrid status.

A hybrid status meant the emergency department would be open to all cases, including non-Covid related cases.

Sungai Buloh Hospital is functioning as the main hospital to treat Covid-19 cases. Currently, the hospital accepts non-Covid cases on a case-by-case basis at the hospital director’s discretion.

Further pre-emptive measures

The National Leprosy Control Centre (PKKN) would be used as a hub for all Covid-19 cases in Kuala Lumpur, especially for Category 1 and 2 cases that did not require ICU treatment.

We have also upgraded eight wards in PKKN to ensure that the beds are fully equipped to help in the treatment of Covid-19 cases.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said during a visit to PKKN at the hospital.

On Thursday (24 February), the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) Covid-19 treatment centre was reopened to ease the burden on public hospitals and lower the risk of Covid-19 patients spreading the infection.

Khairy said MEAPS would reopen with 100 beds first and a standby of 850 beds if needed. This is to further ensure Klang Valley hospitals have the capacity to take in non-Covid cases.

On a further note, the quarantine duration for close contacts has been updated based on a person’s vaccination status.

The changes come into effect starting 1 March 2022.
