Bidding Farewell To Plaza OUG, Netizens Feel Nostalgic As Another Mall Bites The Dust

It’s no secret that the experience of shopping is an emotional one.
Shoppers feel sad and nostalgic when the shutters are pulled down for the last time, and the lights are switched off as another store closed down for good.
Plaza OUG in Old Klang Road was once such a place, bustling and a way of life for its shoppers and workers.
But all that will be a distant memory soon as the building is demolished to make way for new development.
Known by several names in its lifespan, Plaza OUG is best remembered as the Japanese retail group Yaohan among the local community.Â
In December 2021, The Edge City & Country reported that plans are afoot to redevelop Plaza OUG into a 6-storey shopping complex, a 30-storey hotel with 312 rooms and a 41-storey serviced apartment with 361 units.
The Time Has Finally Come
Recently, the excavators have started moving in and netizens feel strange saying goodbye, the thought that Plaza OUG will never be here again.
The moments were shared on social media, including Malaysia Shopping Mall, which uploaded several photos showing the reconstruction work at Plaza OUG.
The mall is primarily unoccupied with no visitors.
According to the post, it will be demolished by the end of this year to make way for two high-rise buildings with a shopping centre and underground parking.Â
The remaining tenants are expected to be moving out soon.
Plaza OUG is one of the oldest shopping centres in Kuala Lumpur.Â
Many Malaysians expressed sadness, especially those who grew up in the heyday of this shopping mall.Â
For some, Plaza OUG’s demise also reminded them of other memorable malls from the same era, which is no longer around.
At the same time, some are concerned that a new shopping mall will only worsen the traffic in the area.
