A Malay woman who graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering has been working as a cashier in a 7-11 convenience store due to difficulty finding a job in her field.

What’s surprising is that she is fluent in Chinese, which should make her a desirable candidate for many jobs.

The woman’s story came to light when Twitter user Muhammad Afizie tweeted about his encounter with her.

While buying coffee at the 7-11 store, he saw the woman communicating fluently with a Chinese customer in Mandarin.

Impressed, he suggested she apply for jobs in multinational companies requiring Mandarin, English, or Malay language skills.

However, the woman revealed that she had already applied for such jobs multiple times but received no response.

She claimed that many companies went quiet and “ghosted” her after she sent in her application.

Despite her qualifications and language skills, she has been unable to secure a job in her field.

After Muhammad Afizie’s tweet went viral, netizens expressed their willingness to provide job opportunities for the woman.

At the same time, some netizens accused employers of being racist in not hiring Malay candidates even though they can speak Mandarin.

Job Hunting Tips Shared

When he met with her again, Muhammad Afizie shared some job-hunting tips.

His suggestions included revising her resume to make it more professional and ATS (applicant tracking system) compliant and applying for jobs consistently in various places.

He also advised her not to leave her current job until she receives an official offer letter from another company.

The woman’s story highlights many graduates’ difficulties in finding employment, even when they possess valuable skills and qualifications.

It also highlights the importance of networking and seeking out advice from others when job hunting.
