Several politicians from Perikatan Nasional (PN) who were present at the Johor MIC Brigade launching ceremony at the EduCity Sports Complex Indoor Stadium will be slapped with a compound for violating SOPs, says Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
A video surfaced yesterday of political figures wading through a packed crowd without appropriate social distancing.
Present at the event were Barisan treasurer Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Johor Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad, MIC president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran, and more.
The video sparked outrage among netizens for violating social distancing SOPs during a time when Covid-19 cases are once again climbing each day.
In response, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has ordered his ministry to issue compounds the politicians and key leaders present as well as the event organisers.

These compounds will be issued under Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342).
Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has issued a formal apology since, admitting that he was in the wrong. He also notes that no one is above the law, and should take this as a lesson.
Saya hadir sebagai tetamu dan saya terima, memang ada kelemahan dalam pematuhan SOP tadi. Tapi, salah tetap salah.

No one is above the law, including myself. This should be a lesson for us all. https://t.co/ditVwQ5cqT pic.twitter.com/qXKXXSJKgZ
“Not Good Enough”
Some netizens, however, feel that the compounds are merely performative, and is not good enough enforcement.
the compound is loose change for them. they have watches more expensive than the compound.

Previously, similar government-linked events have also been slapped with compounds when there were no social distancing SOPs implemented.

Some netizens also called them out for double standards, noting that this is hardly the first or the last time that large-scale government-linked events have seen a disregard for SOPs and walked off with a slap on the wrist.
Sudahlah dgn double standard ini. Sepatutny @HishammuddinH2O & Wigneswaran letak jawatan dpd Kjaan atau pecat! Tiada apa2 alasan boleh diterima dpd Menteri2 kanan dlm Kjaaan yg melanggar SOP. Klu ada kluster baru & orang mati, siapa bertanggungjawab? DAP?

Berapa kali dah Menteri UMNO termasuk Menteri Kesihatan @Khairykj langgar SOP ?

Othere noted that previously, every single attendee was fined the compound at private events, not only a few key people and event organisers.
