Many Malaysians are conservative and still subscribe to sexual abstinence until marriage. This mindset places emphasis on the concept of sexual virginity, especially for women. For many families, brides must be a virgin and give their ‘first time’ to their husbands after marriage. (Strangely enough, men seem to be exempt from this expectation.)
Many people also assume that a torn hymen after their first sexual penetration is a sure sign of a woman’s virginity, even though there is no real scientific basis for this assumption.
Hence, to prove a ‘virgin’ marriage, they will look to signs of bleeding that comes from the tearing of the hymen. (Hence, ‘popping the cherry’.)
As such, there are now products available for purchase online… specifically to ensure the presence of ‘blood’ for the morning after.
A Shocking Find
At this point, nobody is particularly surprised to find discreet items being sold online. The relative anonymity of online purchases meant that Malaysians are more free to explore stuff that may be otherwise too shy to peruse in physical stores.

However, part of those discreet items of the sexual nature now include small sachets of artificial blood available for sale, specifically meant for users to “recreate the virgin experience”, further enforcing the idea of a torn hymen as a sign of virgnity.
The products come up after a quick search online on some of Malaysia’s most popular e-commerce platforms.
According to an initial report from mStar, the product was being sold online for just RM180.
The product should be inserted before sexual intercourse, during which it will break open and “bleed out” similar to the tearing of the hymen.
Other platforms also carry similar items at various prices, all promising the experience of a ‘virgin experience’.
Sure, it could be a kink to be enjoyed by consenting partners (we’re not here to judge!), but the emphasis on correlating blood from the tearing of the hymen with virginity is detrimental to women in particular.
The True Science Behind Hymens
The World Health Organization, among other scientific groups and organizations, have repeatedly cautioned against ‘virginity testing’, because no such thing exists.
The hymen is a fleshy, stretchy bit of tissue in the vagina. This tissue can be torn for a myriad of reasons, such as intense exercise. Sometimes, the hymen may not even tear during actual vaginal penetration, due to its stretch. Some women may not even be born with a hymen.
As such, the tearing of the hymen as a proof of virginity is flawed and places unneccesary stress on women to upkeep this damaging notion or risk being negatively preceived.
These kind of products are not new, and have been sold online (and offline!) for years. Yet perhaps one day they may no longer be need to fake virginities for the sake of an archaic belief anymore.
