Staff assigned to the offices of Special Envoys costs around RM48,000 in wage expenses, according to a written reply from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
It was a response to a query by Johor Baru MP Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir who wanted to know the overall cost including remuneration, allowances, office occupancy and staff for the Minister-level special envoys between 2020 and 2021.
Malay Mail reported that each Special Envoy is provided a total of five staff under the employment allocations in the Service Agreement:
- a senior private secretary
- special officer
- private secretary
- office secretary
- driver
Here’s the estimated brakedown of each officer:
- Grade 54 senior private secretary = estimated maximum monthly salary – RM13,251, fixed allowance – RM2,000.
- Grade 52 special officer = estimated monthly salary – RM12,444, fixed allowance – RM1,600.
- Grade 41/44 private secretary = estimated monthly salary – RM10,406, fixed allowance of RM1,100
- Office secretary = estimated monthly salary – RM3,256, fixed allowance – RM810
- Driver = estimated monthly salary – RM2,939, fixed allowance – RM74
When it’s added up, it’s reported that wage expenditures amount to around RM48,551 per special envoy or RM145,653 for all three. Annually, this would cost in the ballpark of RM1.74 million.
Ismail Sabri also mentioned that all of the special envoy’s offices – Middle East, People’s Republic of China and East Asia, have an office at the Perdana Putra building in Putrajaya without any cost.
Here’s the list of Special Envoys that we have now:
- PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang – Special Envoy to the Middle East
- Progressive Democratic Party President Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing – Special Envoy to China
- Sarawak United Peoples’ Party Deputy President Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem – Special Envoy to East Asia (Japan, South Korea and Taiwan)
