The Housing & Local Government Ministry does not intend to build a monument but to beautify it as well as make it a historic site, based on a post by its Minister, Zuraida Kamarudin.

She said the intention is to commemorate the tragic event that killed 48 occupants of the condominium on 11 December 1993, a dark day in the history of Malaysia.

The area of the Highland Tower needs to be given a new lease of life because it previously invited the locals to feel unhappy because of the social problems that occur in the area. Therefore, the demolition of this derelict building for 27 years will be enlivened through the development of historical places and at the same time can ensure the well-being of residents in the Highland Tower area.

It’s been 27 years

The Highland Tower tragedy happened in 1993 when the 12-storey Block 1 collapsed after 10 days of continuous rain while residents over in Block 2 and Block 3 were evacuated soon after.

According to reports by Malay Mail, 48 people died during that incident, including Carlos Rashid, the son of Former Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Musa Hitam and his wife, Rosina Abu Bakar.

The collapse of the tower was due to a major landslide, caused by heavy rains that burst the diversion pipes.

The government decided to freeze approvals to new hillslope projects for a year after the incident until it was lifted on 23 June 1994.

It’s reported that after years of being abandoned, the towers are now a haven for drug addicts and criminals who use the place as a secret hideout because of its secluded location.
