Pasar Malams Don’t Want To Open Due To Restrictive SOPs

Around 500 hawkers and traders at the Lorong Tuanku Adbul Rahman (TAR) pasar malam have decided not to resume their business for the time being due to restrictive SOPs put in place under the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO).
What you need to know: Lorong TAR Hawkers and Traders Association chairman Azkhalim Suradi said that even though the government has given the green light for traders to resume their business, the SOPs they must follow is too strict. Suradi noted that the SOPs included 1.5 meters between each eight-square-meter stall and no children under the age of 13 or elderly above the age of 60.
Why it matters: If hawkers and traders open, they must bear the losses with a significant reduction of visitors. Thus, even though they are losing their source of income due to the pandemic, they would rather wait out the RMCO than resume business.
What’s new: The Association is currently going over and reviewing the new SOPs with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) before it will be tabled to the National Security Council.
