Malaysia has been suffering from food shortages in the past month and many families have been affected by it. However, it seems like although the country is struggling to satisfy the demand for food, there are still farmers who are neglected and being chased away from their land.

Recently a press statement from the Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) revealed that allegedly a forced eviction and demolition by the Ipoh Land and Mines Office (PTG) was done today at Tambun, Perak.

It states that the PSM chairperson Dr Jeyakumar, 68, along with 3 others have been arrested by the police during the standoff between the Perak Farmers and the land and mines office enforcement officers from Ipoh and the police.

The 3 others include Karthiges Manickam, 42 (PSM Central Committee Member}, Ho Pon Tien, 53, (Farmer) and Kesavan Parvathy, 30 (Perak Socialist Youth). PSM demands that those arrested be immediately released by the police.

That was not all that happened during the standoff. A lady activist Yee Shan was pushed down by an officer resulting in her getting hurt and breaking her tooth.

Through the video that was shared by PSM in their Twitter feed, it can be seen that Yee Shan was pushed, resulting in her falling to the ground face first. This incident took place during this morning’s standoff.

She seemed to be crying in pain while blood could be seen pouring down from her mouth and nose.

The PTG officers then continued to demolish the farm. Even then, the PSM members stood together with the farmers in the standoff.

Perak Farmers

According to the press statement by PSM, it stated that the Perak State Development Board Perbadanan Kerajaan Negeri Perak has allegedly promised these farmers leasing agreements at Perak Hi-Tech Park, an alternate location, since 2012. A two-acre replacement plot of property was offered to them for a thirty-year lease.

However, this promise was allegedly never fulfilled, and are forcefully evicting the farmers under section 425 of the National Code.

“Why evict productive farmers, when they have applied for the land and waited patiently to comply with the State Government’s offer for alternative land? It was the Perak State that failed to relocate them,” the press statement read.

Furthermore, it seems like many memorandums have been submitted to Perak Menteri Besar, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, and the Prime Minister by Kumar Jeyakumar, yet the eviction still happened today.

Thus, PSM is urging Anwar to intervene in the matter as the incident took place in his parliamentary constituency.
“We demand immediate intervention by the Prime Minister being his Parliamentary constituency to resolve the matter and ensure productive farmers are guaranteed land rights to continue farming and ensuring food security for the nation.”

Currently the farmers are protesting the forceful eviction outside a Menteri Besar’s office demanding for him to order the demolition to be stopped.

According to a post by Fourth Media in their Instagram page, it can be seen the farmers are holding a banner and sitting around the office area.
