Teachers play an important role in our lives, not just in our childhood but even as adults, as we carry their wisdom with us wherever we go. Some teachers go above and beyond to make sure they impart more than just knowledge to their students.

One such teacher from Taiping, Perak was recently recognised for his efforts and awarded the 2023 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Award.

The Malaysian teacher, Goh Kok Ming, was among six selected for the regional category. Goh teaches mathematics at SJKC Hua Lian 1.

This year’s competition saw 11,000 nominations from 99 countries.

The Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards, established in 2018, is an international competition that honours and recognises the contributions made by teachers across the world.

Through this international competition, students, parents, and other educators can suggest an outstanding primary or secondary school teacher who is currently teaching.

Goh has dedicated his life in bridging the digital divide in rural areas. He has encouraged many under-enrolled pupils to learn how to code for a better future using App Inventor and Minecraft.

According to FMT, Goh is renowned for his accomplishments in instructing students in computer programming techniques to address societal issues. To inspire his students to create software, he launched the “Kampong Code” programme.

“I have always had an interest in coding and am very happy to share this interest with my students to encourage them to build coding skills for a better future,” stated Goh as reported by FMT.

Goh will also get the Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Award trophy and a total prize package worth RM2,800 in books and electronic materials.

From February 2024, he will also be depicted on the cover of the New Education textbook published by the Cambridge University Press.

Another interesting fact is that Goh is the second Malaysian teacher to receive the prestigious award.

Khalifa Affnan from the Keningau Vocational College in Sabah was named the first Malaysian teacher to win the Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Award in 2022.
