A 39-year-old odd worker was fined RM4,000 by the Alor Setar Magistrate Court today after he pleaded guilty to impersonating the Raja Muda of Perak two months ago.

The court also sentenced him to serve 10 months in jail if he failed to pay the fine.

The accused, Mohammad Fadhil Lope pleaded guilty as soon as the charge was read to him in front of Magistrate Muhammad Zul Hilmi Latif, Utusan Malaysia reported.

Mohammad Fadhil was charged for trying to deceive an officer at the office of the Sultan of Kedah at about 11.30am on 28 June, by impersonating Perak royalty, to allow him to meet the Kedah Sultan.

The prosecution was handled by Deputy State Prosecutor, Asmaa’ Zamri while lawyer Muhammad Syafiq Ahmad from the National Legal Aid Foundation represented the accused.

During mitigation, Syafiq pleaded for a lighter sentence as Mohammad Fadhil is taking care of his child who is still schooling.

He also said that this was Mohammad Fadhil’s first offence and he deeply regretted the act and also pledged never to repeat it.

It was reported previously that the accused had gone to the Sultan of Kedah with two women and introduced himself as the Raja Muda of Perak.

He had also handed over the officer at the office a yellow business card displaying the title and name of “DYMM Raja Muda Perak Tuanku Tun Mamat Fadhil Duke Of Royal Malaysia British Bin DYTM Sheikh Tengku Lope Salleh Of Royal Irish Fusiller Princess Victoria”.

The officer then checked with the Perak State Protocol and Ceremonial Division which showed that nobody from the royal family bears such a name, title, or identity card number.

The officer subsequently lodged a police report against the accused to stop him from continuing to impersonate the Perak royalty.
