A standard six girl was tragically killed where she was believed to have been struck by lightning while talking on her smartphone, in an incident at Kampung Sungai Raya in Gua Musang, Kelantan, yesterday evening.

According to Berita Harian, the victim, Nur Asyqin Qistina M Nor Zawawi was found unconscious by her father, M Nor Zawawi Awang, in her bedroom at 4.50pm.

M Nor Zawawi said that prior to that, a loud lightning explosion was heard as it was raining, leading to power cuts at his home.

He said that he was at a nearby surau during the incident for Asar prayer.

“I went back home and check on any damages before returning to the surau. But not long after that, my wife came around and told me that my daughter is unconscious.

“I found a burn mark on her right arm and also on the mattress while her smartphone was found nearby (her body),” the 54-year-old father was quoted as saying.

M Nor Zawawi said that he had rushed her daughter to Klinik Kuala Betis for treatment, where his daughter was pronounced dead.

Her remains were then brought to Gua Musang Hospital for autopsy.

“Nur Asyqin Qistina might have been struck by lightning when she was using her mobile phone based on the burnt marks on her arm and also the damage to her phone.”

“While the incident is shocking to the whole family, we accepted what had happened,” he said.
