Thailand’s Office of the Royal Society (ORST) has announced that Bangkok will be known by its official name, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon.

On 15 February 2022, Thailand’s Cabinet approved a draft announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office with the updated names of countries, territories, administrative zones, and capitals, including the new name for Bangkok.

The name change isn’t a surprise to some because the Thai locals have been calling the capital city Krung Thep for some time now.

Interestingly, the name Krung Thep Maha Nakhon is still a short form of the full name.

The actual name is even longer: Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.

However, the new name doesn’t mean the name Bangkok is going away. Instead, the Thai capital will be listed as ‘Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok)’ on official documents.

The name Krung Thep Maha Nakhon roughly translates to The City of Angels, The Great City and The Eternal Jewel City.

According to theSun, the name Bangkok has been in use officially since November 2001. The name comes from an old area of Bangkok, which is now part of the greater metropolitan area of the capital, Bangkok Noi and Bangkok Yai districts.
