Appointment Of MPs Into Corporate Roles Based On Capability, Say MoF

Only MPs who are qualified for the role with be appointed in companies under the Minister of Finance (Incorporated) and Government-linked companies according to Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

According to reports by MalaysiaKini, the Finance Minister said these appointments as members of boards of directors (BOD) or chairpersons were made based on their qualifications, experience, and expertise.

He explained that there are requirements for an MP to join the BOD of the Minister of Finance and the same goes for GLCs and non Bursa listed companies who also have their procedures.

Tengku Zafrul said that it’s common for politicians to be appointed and replace corporate figures on various BODs.

He also added that these appointments are made so that there will be a check and balance between the BOD and the management in accordance with the Malaysia Code of Corporate Governance 2017.

In conclusion, the appointments of BOD members in the companies under the Minister of Finance (Incorporated) were not merely filling the positions. But rather, the appointments were matched based on the needs of the companies while taking into consideration the individual’s background and capability.

The statement was made to respond to Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim (PH-Port Dickson) who asked the Minister on the policy of appointing MPs in GLCs and its relevance.
