A charred woman’s body was found in a living skills workshop at SMK Seri Mulia in Cheras on 12 March.

It was discovered that the victim was a 25-year-old woman named Fong Hsu Kei who worked as the bookstore supervisor in the secondary school.

A school security guard was arrested on suspicion for allegedly trying to rape the victim and murdered her between 1.45am and 5.30pm on that day.

According to Free Malaysia Today, the 35-year-old security guard, Yusri Latiff, has been charged in the Kuala Lumpur magistrate’s court today, 23 March, for the murder.

He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the death penalty if convicted.

He did not record a plea after the charge was read out before the magistrate Wong Chai Sia.

According to Oh My Media, the court has denied bail for the accused and fixed the court mention date on 25 May 2022.

Free Malaysia Today reported that the security guard, who had been working at the school for two years, had four previous convictions including outraging modesty and snatch theft.

Parent Action Group for Education chairman Noor Azimah questioned how the suspect could be employed in a school setting despite having prior convictions.

The chairman of the Melaka Action Group for Parents in Education Mak Chee Kin said stern action should be taken against security firms whose employees were involved in criminal cases and their contracts should be terminated.

Netizens also questioned how the security guard secured the job to work in a school and conveyed their condolences to the victim’s family.

They hope the school administrators would take the initiative to do a background check before hiring school security guards because it concerns the safety of students.
