The lockdown seemed like a boon for productivity and creativity at first.
By staying at home, I get to take a break from the routine of everyday life, gain back time often lost during a commute, and best of all, peace and quiet.
But, creativity is a fickle beast. It needs to be fed, it needs to be taken on walks, and most of all, it is at its best only when the balance of physical and mental health is maintained.
When left unchecked during a lockdown, creativity can be come anaemic, lethargic, and unproductive.
It did not take long for me to realise that rolling out of bed and going straight to my workstation loses its novelty fast. Soon ideas were few and far between.
It did not help that I used my workstation to do everything else other than sleep. That is where my computer is, so that is where I work, I learn, I do video calls, and where I consume entertainment.
Things had to change; my creativity beast was not feeling well and I had to do something.
Separating my sleeping area from all other activities, especially doom scrolling and entertainment, was a good start. The trick is to maintain regular sleeping hours. There are apps and smart wearables that can help with that.
Next, I had to split how I use my workstation into two: one for productivity and one for leisure.
The productivity area is restricted to work, creativity, and self-improvement. It has to be clear of distractions because this is where I create and learn.
It is also a very personal space. For you it could be a place where you learn a new skill, write that novel you always wanted, record a song, or anything else, as long it is productive.
If I feel the itch to watch a video, play a game, read some fiction, or just relax there is a separate recreational area. This is also where I eat and generally do nothing when I just cannot adult anymore.
The trick is to focus on that one relaxing thing at a time, so do not scroll the feeds while watching a show. Distraction leads to dissatisfaction.
There is one more area that I had to zone out, one that I’ve been neglecting and dreading. It is the physical activity area.
The productivity and leisure areas help with maintaining mental health, the sleeping area and the physical activity areas help maintain both physical and mental health.
A few weights and a mat make a good start. An app or an exercise video to follow along works as well. There are even gaming consoles and peripherals that can help if you’re so inclined.
Of the four areas, this is actually a good place to start. Physical activities will lead to better sleep, and the discipline needed will keep productivity and recreational times in check.
Tidy up and timing
The first rule is not to cross-contaminate the areas and keep each area tidy and clean. Getting into the KonMari Method helps. The act of tidying up itself is relaxing, cathartic, and supports the overall goal of maintaining a balance of mental and physical health for creativity.
The second rule is to spend a regular minimum amount of time (30 minutes a day) in the physical area, a regular maximum amount of time (8 hours a day) in the sleeping area, and do not let the time spent in the leisure area get out of hand.
This method of assigning four different areas, one for each type of activity is not impossible even in a small area, such as a room, let alone an apartment or a house.
It may be difficult at first and it will have to be adapted to and your creativity, but it really helps. Especially if you want to make a case that you want to continue working from home.
The right tool for the job
It might seem like you’ll need three PCs for this to work, but actually, you would only need one. A single computer could help you be creative, productive, relax, be entertained, and even work out.
The solution is obviously a laptop: Using a single area for everything muddles its effectiveness, so you need something that you can carry from area to area, something that is designed to be the next-level companion for on-the-go productivity and creativity and something with multiple screens.
It might seem like a luxury, but having multiple screens helps a lot. It doesn’t matter if you are editing videos, creating art, recording music, or writing a story, having multiple screens makes life easier especially when it comes to creating creative content. And on this laptop, it also doubles as a touchscreen.
The ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo 15 OLED (UX582) is a perfect choice. It comes with Windows 10 Pro, 32GB of RAM, 1TB of solid-state storage, a GeForce RTX 3070 graphics processor, a 15.6in OLED 4K UHD display, a 92WHrs battery, and ScreenPad Plus.
That means it has more than enough power and capacity for the most demanding creative applications, a generous and gorgeous screen that is still portable, and a built-in secondary touch screen that automatically tilts to improves readability, aids cooling, and works seamlessly with the main display.
You also have two options to go with that powerful NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 laptop GPU with all the advancements of NVIDIA Studio for creators. You can either pick the latest Intel Core i7-10870H (RM12,999) or the more powerful Intel Core i9-10980HK (RM15,999).
