When you think of Indian food in KL, your mind probably drifts toward the heavy gravies of the north or the banana leaf staples of the south. But tucked away in Bangsar Village I is a spot that’s been quietly (and now loudly, thanks to a Michelin nod) rewriting the script on what Indian cuisine can look like in Malaysia.

Kayra is a tribute to the coastal flavors of Kerala that manages to be both deeply traditional and refreshingly chic.

A Legacy on a Plate

Kayra isn’t just another trendy eatery; it’s a story three generations in the making. Owner Meriam Alfonso isn’t just serving food, she’s serving her heritage. Her grandparents opened a restaurant in Johor Bahru back in 1949, and Kayra is the modern evolution of those kitchen memories that served food from Kerala.

Walking in, you aren’t greeted by the typical industrial-cold vibe. Instead, the space is warm, with murals of Kerala’s backwaters and houseboats that make you feel like you’ve been whisked away to the Malabar Coast.

What to Order? (Everything, if possible)

Kerala cuisine is famous for its use of coconut, seafood, and a certain tang that sets it apart. If it’s your first time, you absolutely cannot skip the Kerala Dahi Puri. Unlike the street-food version you might know, these are stuffed with creamy tapioca and served with tomato rasam shots. It’s a literal explosion of flavour.

The Prawn Mango Curry is another showstopper. Creamy, slightly sweet, and perfectly balanced. For those who want something heartier, the Fish Moilee Biryani (featuring grilled seabass or snapper) is the kind of dish that makes you wonder why you ever settled for a basic chicken biryani.

And for the adventurous, the Waffam — a cross between an appam and a waffle — is a quirky, fermented delight that pairs surprisingly well with their savory toppings.

Take the Magic Home: The Kayra Cooking Series

Now, here’s the best part for those of us who lack professional chef skills but still want to impress at the next potluck. Meriam has launched the Kayra Cooking Series, a range of premium curry pastes and masala packets that let you recreate Kayra’s signature flavors in your own kitchen.

These aren’t your average supermarket “instant” pastes. We’re talking about the Moilee Curry, Kerala Fish Curry, and even their Biryani Masala. According to the shop, these are fully cooked and seasoned, meaning you can have a Michelin-level Kerala meal on your table in about 10 minutes.

They sell for around RM19.50 per packet (or a combo of 3 for RM55), and honestly, it’s a lifesaver for anyone who wants that deep, authentic spice profile without having to spend hours over a stove or hunting down specific Keralan spices.

The Verdict

Kayra isn’t just a place to eat; it’s an experience. Whether you’re there for a fancy date night or just grabbing a few curry packets to stock up your pantry, Meriam has managed to do something rare: keeping the soul of her grandparents’ recipes alive while making them look and taste like the future of Malaysian dining.
