Are you one of those people who wakes up before your alarm rings, while it’s still dark outside and even the birds are still sleeping? Do you love to go on a drive during this window of tranquility before the day starts getting busy, and stop somewhere for a satisfying breakfast?

While most restaurants and cafés that serve breakfast in the morning don’t open until the sun is shining, there are a few spots that cater to early birds who can’t sleep past 5:30am.

Although the options might be limited, they’re still great places for you to have breakfast while the air is still cool with morning dew.

Here are some spots around the Klang Valley we think are worth a drive for breakfast in the wee hours of the morning.

1. Kedai Makan Kawan, Sungai Buloh

Kedai Makan Kawan in Kuang serves a wide range of local favourites such as nasi lemak kukus (with choice of squid, cockles, or chicken on the side) from RM8. If you want something lighter to snack on, they also have cekodok for RM5 per packet.

Fancy something Western for breakfast? They’ve got you covered with Bangkok Seafood Tomyam pasta that comes with mussels, prawns and squid for RM17 or Chicken Buttermilk Pasta at RM15.

If you’re more of a roti person, order a soft chappati with a side of sardine (RM2) or mutton curry (RM7). They also have the usual roti canai if you prefer that, or roti Arab for something more fluffy to bite into.

Other selections on their menu include chicken porridge (RM5), roti canai sarang burung sardin (RM6), murtabak (RM7), mee rebus (RM8), and mee bandung (RM8).

There’s so much to eat here, you might have to make multiple visits to try all the food!

Kedai Makan Kawan opens as early as 6:30am until 11:00am to serve the breakfast crowd.

2. 333 Kopitiam, Batang Kali

For this eatery, we recommend taking a relaxing drive up Jalan Ulu Yam to Batang Kali early in the morning.

333 Kopitiam is your classic Chinese kopitiam with a very special signature dish: Taro (yam) noodles.

This unique noodle made from taro root has a slightly sweet, earthy flavour, and has a softer, less elastic texture compared to wheat noodles. Served in a piping hot, thick, savoury broth with pieces of chopped yam and pork meat, a bowl of this in the cool morning air will surely leave you satisfied.

A small bowl of Taro Noodle Soup costs RM11. If you’re really hungry, the large bowl is priced at RM16.

The place also offers other noodle dishes such as Ulu Yam Loh Mee, Sweet Potato Noodle Soup, Egg Gravy Fried Mee Sua, Long Bean Noodle Soup, and more. Pair your meal with a glass of Kopi O and you’re good to go!

333 Kopitiam is open daily except on Monday from 6am to 2pm.

Before we forget, do keep in mind that this is a non-halal establishment.

3. Mak Jah Corner, Ampang Jaya

This beloved eatery is well known among residents of Ampang and surrounding areas like Ukay Perdana and Bukit Antarabangsa.

Mak Jah Corner serves up excellent nasi lemak with all the usual fixings like hard boiled egg, fresh cucumber slices, anchovies and their delicious spicy sambal. If you’re really hungry, you could add more lauk to your plate like their sambal sotong, paru, fried chicken, or chicken rendang.

The best thing about Mak Jah Corner, in our opinion, is the wide selection of traditional Malay kuih they offer: kuih bakar, lapis pandan, onde-onde, kuih lenggang, curry puffs and so many more.

Their kuih selection is perfect for a post-breakfast dessert. Our only advice is to get there as early as you can as the nasi lemak and kuih sell out pretty fast!

Mak Jah Corner is open daily from 7am to 5pm.

4. Padangs On Wheels, Chow Kit

Seeking a slightly more atas breakfast experience? Padangs On Wheels in Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur, serves up authentic Minangkabau fare in a comfortable dining environment.

Last year, they launched their sarapan menu to cater to early birds looking to get breakfast.

Since they’re nasi padang specialists, their breakfast menu offers a few unique items such as their Nasi Uduk Telur Berlado (nasi lemak with Minangkabau sambal balado), Lontong Sotong, Bakso Bom, and Soto Daging.

Although most people favour this spot for lunch, there’s nothing wrong with having a big breakfast early in the morning to start your day.

They have quite an extensive menu; chicken, beef and fish dishes cooked Padang style (berlado, masak lemak, rendang etc.) as well as vegetable selections such as pucuk paku, pucuk ubi, kangkung, terung, and kacang panjang.

You could also opt for the set meals if you’re not dining in a large group, to keep things simple.

Padangs On Wheels open from 7:30am to 7pm, and are closed on Mondays.

5. Roti Leleh Batu Arang, Rawang

A hidden gem of a breakfast spot, Roti Leleh Batu Arang is nestled just outside Rawang, Selangor. This little warung serves up toast with runny, half boiled eggs drizzled with a special sauce on top and a side of baked beans.

They also offer other Malaysian breakfast favourites such as bihun goreng, kuey teow goreng, nasi goreng, soto, lemang and rendang as well as small bites like curry puffs, doughnuts, pulut panggang, bergedil, and more.

This spot is a popular destination for cyclists who pass by the Batu Arang township who go there for their roti leleh.

Roti Leleh Baru Arang is open every day from 7am to 12pm except on Tuesdays and public holidays.
