What’s the first sunnah food you think of when Ramadan arrives? Of course, it’s dates! Surely, Ramadan is not complete without dates, right?

There are many types of dates in the market such as the Ajwa, Rabbi, Mabroom, Mazafati and many more.

Speaking of dates, recently there was an incident on social media where a Twitter user (@nikfaiqq) found maggot-like eggs inside a date.

Through a tweet uploaded by him, the Twitter user said he only noticed the presence of the eggs in a date fruit he bought for RM10 after eating a few seeds.

He added that the date has a soft and sweet texture.

Because it was a little ‘nauseating’ to see the eggs inside the date, he advised the public to wash the date before eating it to avoid the same thing from happening to them.

Netizens couldn’t believe their eyes

With the stomach-turning picture of the date shared by @nikfaiqq, a lot of people expressed their shock and disgust in the comment section.

Turns out, a lot of people still do not wash or check their dates before they consume them.

One netizen also advised looking at the expiry date of the dates to avoid buying “bad” dates with a sandy or granulated texture.

Even more surprising, some people have also faced the same situation as @nikfaiqq. But one of them thought that the white colour inside the date was supposed to be sugar lumps.

At the same time, other netizens also joked that the existence of eggs in dates is considered to be additional nutrition.

Others speculate that those are not maggot eggs, they’re just beetle eggs or larvae.

Bugs or pests you can find on dates

According to Zoology Malaysia in their Twitter thread a few years ago, they shared some types of problems that can cause a date to go bad.

Some of them include:

  1. Tiny bugs (cockroaches or beetle)
  2. Worms
  3. Moth larva with its droppings (dark deposits)
  4. Black dust (mould)

Besides that, Public Health Malaysia has also warned Malaysians to always peel open the dates and wash them before eating.

How to Wash Dates Correctly

It’s actually quite easy to wash dates. You just need salt, plain water, a bowl and dry tissue.

The methods are as follows:

  1. Soak dates in salt water for five to ten minutes.
  2. Filter the soaking water.
  3. Rinse the dates with plain water.
  4. Dry the dates using a dry tissue.

Even though the fruit has been washed, don’t worry, its nutritional value remains the same and does not change.
