Local coffee chain Zus and local biscuit brand Julies is collaborating to serve you childhood nostalgia in a cup!

The Kenangan Merdeka series of drinks include the Earl Grey Tarik Frappe, Coconut Caramel Cracker Frappe, Earl Grey (Tak) Cham-pur, and even an Apam Balik cake!

The Frappe series blends in Julie’s signature peanut sandwich crackers and butter crackers for a truly biscuity drink. And because we’re suckers for the good old days, we just had to give it a try.

The Taste Test

We got everything on the menu because they looked so good, and also because I’m a sucker for earl grey.

The Earl Grey Tarik Frappe has a fragrant and unmistakably earl grey base. It is blended with a generous amount of Julie’s signature peanut sandwich crackers so you also get a rich aftertaste of that exact peanut butter taste.

The end result is an indulgent and happy drink with rich buttery flavours that isn’t overwhelmingly sweet and is perfect on a hot day.

Next, the Coconut Caramel Cracker Frappe comes topped with Julie’s wafer cubes on the whipped cream for a very pretty look. Julie’s butter crackers are blended into the drink for a crunchy mouthfeel.

The coconut cream on top was enjoyable and lended a tropical touch to the sweet drink. Paired with the caramel drizzle, you get a sweet coconut-y drink with a yummy crunch.

If frappes are a bit too heavy for you, the Earl Grey Cham-Pur is a novel take on our national drink. This drink uses Zus’ Special Cham, a mix of coffee and milk tea, with earl grey for a refreshing taste that elevates the silky flavours of cham. There’s also the Earl Grey Tak Cham-pur that comes without the coffee.

Lastly, the Apam Balik cake tastes exactly like the classic after-school dessert but in a cake form. It even has sweet corn in the middle! The cake itself is quite rich and dense, though the corn is an interesting take and the buttercream icing tastes exactly like Julie’s peanut butter too.

The Verdict

If you like Julie’s biscuits or have fond memories of it, then these drinks will definitely be a blast to the past.

The prices are quite reasonable for a hand-crafted drink.

The frappes are well-balanced with the right amount of biscuits, flavour, and sweetness, that makes it much like drinking happy memories.

But even their lighter drinks like the Earl Grey Cham-pur is smooth yet novel in a very classic way.

Additionally, Zus Coffee is running various promotions and games for the entirety of this patriotic season.
