No doubt, KL is a safe haven for coffee lovers and cafe hunters alike. If you’re an avid cafe hunter, here’s one more cafe that you should add to your list.

Originally from Singapore, Common Man Coffee Roasters KL (CMCR) is a cafe that serves speciality coffee along with a variety of hearty brunch selections.

Located near TTDI, this cafe’s exterior doesn’t do it justice. Despite the petite entrance overshadowed by a huge fitness centre, CMCR is actually a very spacious place filled with aesthetic features and comfortable seatings. You’ll feel the very ‘atas‘ vibe when you walk into the cafe.

The spacious cafe also hosts a little space for barista classes.

Established in 2016, they have menus catering from fancy small snacks to big filling meals for all vegan, vegetarian and everyone alike. Currently, they’re launching their new all-day menu featuring their classic brunch options as well as three new additions.

The Taste Test

The new additions are Common Man Caesar [RM33], Umami Mushroom Avocado Toast [RM32] and the Smashed Burger [RM45].

I would say the main highlight of the new menu would be the Smashed Burger. Yes, it’s a bit extravagant, but for a good reason. The ground beef patties are so juicy! (No wonder lah, they’re smashed with bone marrow). They also serve this along with a side of herbed fries.

And I also like how the patty pairs well with the beetroot barbecue sauce and onion jam. The sauces have a combination of sweet, zesty, and sharp taste, which complements the juiciness of the beef patty.

The Umami Mushroom Avocado Toast also stole the show with its deliciously infused teriyaki mushrooms and creamy seasoned avocado on top of the soft toasted sourdough focaccia.

Additionally, they also have their staple favourites, such as the Common Man Fluffy Pancakes, Turkish Common Man Breakfast, Chilli Chicken, Beef Cheek Eggs Benedict and Common Man Full Breakfast. The full breakfast has a bit of everything on a plate, but it’s a bit tiring to finish all of it. Here’s the rest of the menu if you want to take a look.

For the drinks, they have different types of coffee, teas, juices as well as smoothies. For those experimental black coffee lovers, you should try their filter coffee. From their recommended slow brews to their nitro cold brews, you can choose what kind of single-origin coffee or coffee blends you want.

Not only do they come in a very cute ceramic pot and cup (for the hot ones), but you can also collect cute cards explaining where the beans come from.

These are like collectable pokemon cards. Every type of single-origin coffee has its own story of where they’re born and bred.

The Verdict

All of their meals are indeed hearty but if you’re going for something delicious and new, I would most definitely recommend the Umami Mushroom Avocado Toast and Smashed Burger.

Another meal that deserves a shoutout is the Turkish Common Man Breakfast. No, it’s definitely not for a mere common man. A common man may just eat a two-ringgit nasi lemak tepi jalan but this is an elevated ‘common man’ experience. The hummus is just magnificent.

For the coffee, if you love fruity black coffee, I would recommend the Bulaago Slow Brew. If you’re a bit keen on a more bitter and caramelised black coffee, go for the Nkonge or Gitwe UnCommon Single-Origin brew. If you just like a latte with a little strong punch of coffee, try the Picollo Latte.

Although their prices are indeed on the steep side, the grand quality and excellent service make it all worth it. While they do serve alcohol, rest assured that their food is pork-free.

They Also Have A Barista Academy

They’re not called the Coffee Roasters for nothing, you know. Over at the cafe, there’s a cute little enclosed space, specially reserved for those who wanna take barista classes during the weekends or selected weekdays.

They cover classes like essential coffee knowledge, barista skills, latte art, specialty coffee tasting and more for both beginners and professionals. You can learn to differentiate between single-origin coffee and coffee blends, how to operate a coffee machine, types of brewing methods, and also make awesome artsy latte arts (it’s everyone’s dream) depending on the programs you’ll take. (Don’t leave until you can make a swan latte art!)

The duration of the classes would vary according to group sizes but the sessions would still allow a productive one-to-one interaction with the instructor.
