Malaysian Instafamous chef Khairul Amin Kamarulzaman began selling his own-recipe sambal product, Sambal Nyet, just three months ago. In that time, he has reached over RM1 million in SambalNyet sales on his online shop!

Khairul Amin, better known as Khairulaming on social media, recorded his journey in a series of Tweets which has managed to garner over 29.6K retweets at the time of writing.

He makes sure to reinvest up to 80% of the revenue made back into his own business. He even got a new 14,000 sqft warehouse up and running to increase his production rate from 1,000 bottles of SambalNyet a day to 4,000 bottles a day. He still aims to increase his rate of production to 100,000 bottles a month to meet his demand.

However, he also makes sure to maintain the quality of his product, especially in terms of hygiene and taste.

In fact, he recalls throwing away 3,000 bottles of sambal in February because the quality was not up to par. According to investigations, there was an issue at the bottling stage that caused some bottles to turn rancid or spill.

In fact, Khairul also has set up a customer hotline dedicated to help his customers. The hotline diverts the calls into customers who want to purchase the product and customers who have issues with the product, so that his company can help resolve all inquiries quickly, which translates to a much better customer experience.

Although the packaging issue has been fixed, Khairul insists that he will still keep an eye out for further improvements to the production of SambalNyet.

He still plans on expanding the business, with future plans such as renovating the warehouse to be more spacious and comfortable, buying more machines to aid in production, and growing his team.

An insatiable demand for sambal

The demand for Khairul’s sambal hasn’t decreased even since the initial launch. He sells the sambal on Shopee, updating his online shop with new stock 9 times a day. Each time, all his offered stock will sell out within 30 seconds to a minute!

Khairul has been putting so much reinvestment to raise his production capacity for this reason, as his current capactiy cannot meet his customer’s demands. With a better production capacity, he hopes that more people will be able to try out the SambalNyet.

As a result, he notes that this is his priority for the time being, and will focus on selling the sambal via his online shop. It is only after he is able to comfortably meet the demand for his sambal that he will consider other ways of distribution in grocery stores or retail shops.

One of the delays is that he is currently running the business remotely from KL, while the business is based in Kelantan. Although he cannot be there physically to supervise the production of SambalNyet, he trusts his team fully to run the business well.
