The latest new Starbucks drink has dropped today, adding to the chain’s already varied options of plant-based drinks. Starbucks stores in Malaysia already carry soymilk, almond milk, and coconut milk that can be swapped in for regular dairy milk in their drinks.

Plant-based alternatives are a good move for the growing number of vegans in the country, or even for people with lactose intolerance (which is pretty common in Asian countries) or digestive issues.

Now, Starbucks is adding oatmilk to the lineup with the new Oatmilk Cocoa Macchiato. Oatmilk has largely been touted as one of the best alternatives to dairy milk due to its richer protein content and creamier consistency.

To test out the new Oatmilk Cocoa Macchiato, we tried it together with the regular Cocoa Macchiato with dairy milk to see the difference.

Visually, there is a slight difference. The oatmilk cocoa macchiato takes on a darker hue while the dairy version has a brighter white shade.

Drinking the oatmilk cocoa macchiato on its own is rather satisfying, with a thick rich taste of coffee and a mildly sweet aftertaste of oat. The espresso is paired with oatmilk and vanilla syrup, then topped with a drizzle of rich cocoa sauce, lending itself to a signature drink.

Comparing this to its dairy counterpart, however, draws interesting conclusions. The dairy in the regular cocoa macchiato definitely mellows out the strong taste of roast coffee, resulting in a milder roast but creamier taste. The rich milkiness sparks familiarity that solidifies itself as a Starbucks drink for anyone who often drinks the chain’s frappucinos or lattes.

This, of course, does not mean that the oatmilk alternative is somehow less of a Starbucks drink. The oatmilk cocoa macchiato is lighter, milder, and a touch less sweet, making it the perfect alternative for those who might be looking to make healthier lifestyle choices.
