These M’sian-made Raya batik swiss rolls are so beautiful they’re viral!

In this social media day and age, having the tastiest food just doesn’t cut it anymore.

Now, your food has to be Instagrammable as well! Which is why when we saw these beautiful batik swiss rolls a Malaysian has been making as Raya gifts, our first thought was: we need some of those!

Keem Ooi is a full-time piano and vocal teacher who likes to bake in her free time.

She regularly shares her work on Facebook and recently posted some photos of batik themed swiss rolls she made as gifts for her friends who were celebrating Raya.

We caught up with her to ask her a little bit more about her cakes.

Keem Ooi told us that she started baking at a young age with her mother. Her mother taught her all the basic skills she needed to bake.

Then, three years ago Keem joined a FB Baking group as a hobby. She regularly took part in bake-along competitions the group would organise.

These bake-alongs were often themed and participants would submit their delicious entries to the competition.

This levelled up her baking skills, massively. As you can see.

In case you were wondering, Keem is also an artist and actually, hand draws the batik on the cakes.

Her process starts by piping the outlines of the pattern and then chilling it in the fridge while she prepares the main sponge batter. She then pours the batter over the chilled pattern and bakes the cake. After the cake is baked, she spreads on the cream and rolls it into a swiss roll. Each cake takes about 2 hours to make.

We bet you’re super excited to order your own beautiful batik swiss roll from Keem now right? Sadly, she doesn’t sell them.

Since they take several hours to craft and bake, she doesn’t have the time to make them and sell them as a full-time piano and vocal teacher. She only has time to bake at night after her classes. Sad kan?!

However, Keem did say she is considering teaching people how to make these cakes since they’re becoming so popular! So if you’re really interested, you can sign up for her class once it starts!

In the meantime, you can scroll through her Instagram for more yummy and beautiful pastries!
