The science is in: High-fat diet is related to depression.

This is based on a research article published in the journal Translational Psychiatry that found high-fat diets promote depression-like behaviour in mice.

Over a period of 3 to 8 weeks, mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) and monitored for depression-like behaviour.

When compared to mice that were given normal diets, they found the HFD mice were less inclined to move in tail suspension and forced swim tests, a behaviour change related to depression.

According to Psychology Today, the researchers discovered that a high-fat diet messes up the normal functions of the hypothalamus, a tiny portion of the brain that controls hormone release, which affects your mood.

There is some good news though; the researchers concluded that their findings could lead to a new form of antidepressants specifically for overweight and obese people.
