The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) have entered into a collaboration aimed at improving the standards of surgical practice through education, training, assessment, and accreditation.
The agreement was signed during UNIMAS visit to RCSEd, Edinburgh, Scotland last Thursday, attended by Professor Rowan Parks, President of RCSEd, and YBhg. Professor Datuk Dr. Mohamad Kadim Suaidi, UNIMAS Vice-Chancellor.
The partnership will enable both organizations to achieve their aims of developing and upholding the highest standards of surgical practice. The collaboration will include the running of diets of the examination for the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) in Kuching, Malaysia. This initiative will provide a local platform for surgeons to access the prestigious MRCS qualification, which is highly respected globally.
RCSEd and UNIMAS will also deliver in-person or online courses that support the training and development of surgical personnel in Malaysia. The courses will be designed to meet the specific needs of surgical personnel, ensuring that they have access to the best possible training and resources to deliver quality care to patients.
Commenting on the collaboration, Professor Rowan Parks said, “We are excited to be working with UNIMAS to improve the standards of surgical practice in Malaysia. Our partnership will provide Malaysian surgeons with access to world-class training and resources, which will enable them to deliver the best possible care to patients.
He added, “This reaffirms that RCSEd plays a crucial role not only in developing the surgical profession but also in nurturing individuals. Given that surgical training involves one of the longest career pathways in medicine, it requires rigorous physical and practical expertise to manage patients and conduct procedures throughout the day.”
Furthermore, the collaboration will involve engaging surgical personnel in Malaysia through meetings and, where appropriate, College membership benefits. This will provide Malaysian surgeons with an opportunity to interact with their international counterparts and share knowledge and experience.
According to Mohamad Kadim, “We are delighted to be partnering with RCSEd to deliver high-quality surgical training and education to surgical personnel in Malaysia. This collaboration will enable us to enhance the skills and knowledge of our surgeons, which will ultimately benefit patients in Malaysia.”
In addition, UNIMAS recently hosted a conference in partnership with RCSEd and the Academy for Silent Mentors in Kuching. Members of the Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare, RCSEd participated in the conference, which included an aortic symposium attended by Mr. Pala Rajesh, former Vice President of RCSEd.
The signing ceremony was also witnessed by Ms. Clare McNaught, Vice President of RCSEd, YBhg. Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, Chairman of the UNIMAS Board of Directors, YBhg. Dato’ Seri Dr. Syed Hussian Al Junid, UNIMAS Board of Director and Professor Dr. Ehfa Bujang Safawi, Director of UNIMAS Teaching Hospital & Medical Centre.
The partnership builds on RCSEd’s commitment to supporting the development of the surgical profession in Southeast Asia. In 2018, RCSEd opened its first International office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to invest in and support its members and fellows in the region providing a range of services, including courses, training, and support for professional development. The partnership with UNIMAS represents a significant milestone in RCSEd’s efforts to elevate the standards of surgical practice in Malaysia and reinforce its commitment to this goal.
