The global food industry is constantly faced with issues that affect global food supply, such as climate change, population increase, and others.

Recently, we saw how a prevailing global situation can adversely affect stocks of chicken, the price of cooking oil, and even the humble roti canai.

While we look up to the government for shaping policies to fix our problems and have witnessed various movements initiated among institutions calling for solutions, we must also ponder if we should look within ourselves and reflect on our own capability in contributing to solutions.

As the saying goes, “The first step in solving a problem is recognising there is a problem”, what we need is to get to the root cause of the issue.

We must aim at the source of the problem, which is none other than human behaviour. As the adage goes, prevention is better than finding a cure. A thorough behavioural reform is needed to achieve the ideal outcome.

Clearly, now is the time for resolution. It is the right moment to develop a mindset that embraces sustainability through education and continuous practice. It is time to take a collective look into building a holistic approach – in thinking, in action, and in practice, before it could all be embraced as part and parcel of life.

The younger generation, being inheritors of the future, is the target group to start with. It will take a couple of decades for a generation to adopt a new culture. Yet, we must educate the youth of today on the importance of sustaining the agriculture industry and thus, ensuring the security of our food supply for a long time to come.

We believe the mindset among youth today can be cultivated by a revolutionary knowledge-based programme that integrates the real-world application of agriculture and its practices, by utilising technology, digital content, and outdoor classroom learning experiences.

At the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture, and Agrotourism 2022 festival (MAHA 2022), we are introducing AGREX (Agroculture Axcelerator Program), an innovation of MARDI Corporation and Boxcube Travellers (BXCT), which is set to re-establish a new fervour towards the agriculture industry, by all walks of life.

It involves a series of thought-provoking experiential knowledge sessions conducted by professional trainers & educators from MARDI and other research institutions. One simply signs up on the AGREX portal as a student, trainer, or school to instantly embark on the programme.

In addition, the AGREX program will also create a welcome source of income for trainers, trainees, teachers, and educators in the country, who can sign up as AGREX coaches and trainers online.

With the adoption of digital technology, AGREX aims to inspire a new generation of people to naturally embrace a more sustainable lifestyle, incorporating personal agricultural practices from the comforts of home.

First introduced at the Dubai Expo 2020, MAHA 2022 is the first time AGREX is formally introduced to the local market, attracting interest from all sectors of agriculture, public and private, schools to tertiary institutions, as well as general members of the public.

It is hoped that AGREX will become a catalyst for change in instilling a new trend of agro-culture among the younger generation and a following for all walks of life.
